Prof. Michael Frater FSTE

Professor Michael Frater is the Rector of UNSW Canberra at the Australian Defence Force
Academy (2011- current). Michael Frater holds bachelor degrees in electrical engineering and
science from the University of Sydney, a Masters in Higher Education from the University of New
South Wales and a Doctor of Philosophy in systems engineering from the Australian National
University. His major research interest is in communications applications. He is currently
pursuing projects in video communications and underwater networks. Professor Frater served as
an officer in the Army Reserve (Royal Australian Corps of Signals) from 1996 until 2005,
including roles as a troop commander, squadron operations officer and second in command of a
signals squadron. He is a fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and
Engineering, and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Australia.
